The Rock Theatre was an all-ages Seattle live club established by Tony Chu that first opened its gates in December 1984.
Chu had previously run another club in Seattle - the Gorilla Room - which existed from March 1980 to September 1981.
For the vast majority of the Rock Theatre's existence, it was located at 410 5th Avenue South in Seattle's Chinatown neighborhood.
Having been a former two-screen movie theater, it consisted of two rooms:
The Omni Room and the slightly smaller Gorilla Gardens, which were separated by a common lobby and both had a capacity of about 300-350 people.
Often times, there would be a punk show in one room and a metal show in the other.
The Chinatown location permanently closed in late October 1985 and the Rock Theatre was subsequently relocated to a former auto-parts warehouse at 307 Nickerson Street in Seattle's North Queen Anne neighborhood,
consisting of only one room.
After only a few shows at the new location, the club permanently went out of business after a riot broke out when police closed down a show in late November 1985 for firecode violations.
The name Gorilla Gardens was regularly used as a synonym for the whole venue. Therefore, in many cases it is not clear which performers played in which room.
This chronology usually only separates between the two rooms if the Omni Room is specifically mentioned in a show advert or if visual proof exists.

Notes
- There were two shows on this date at 7PM and 10PM.
- The venue was oversold, leading to a crowd collecting around the entrance. Between shows, police and fire department showed up to investigate and discovered that the venue did not have a sufficient number
of unblocked emergency exits. Without further ado, the staff cut a hole in the side of the building with a chainsaw to avoid a closure of the venue.
- The January 1985 issue of The Rocket announced this show for January 24. It is believed that this date either stemmed from an early planning stage of the show or was a mistake.

contribute |
In order to keep this guide alive and make it even better and more accurate, we rely on your contributions. We are always looking for:
- new or corrected information on any show or content
- new or upgraded flyers, posters, calendars, tickets, etc.
- new or upgraded photos or videos
Please email us at info@gorillagardensguide.com!
Visual material is especially helpful: While the Omni Room and the Gorilla Gardens looked virtually alike, there were subtle differences.
Additionally, certain characteristics of the rooms changed over time (stage lights, scribblings on the back wall etc.).
Often times, these circumstances not only allow for the determination of the room a show was held in, but also for a more or less precise chronological classification.
Got material not intended for public release? Please still get in touch, it might help date other currently undated content. Confidential treatment guaranteed.
